Subtle Type

 Create Subtle Type
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Beginners Plus To Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create reflective, subtle type.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open a New document, and set the following attributes - or your own choice.

2/
Then set the Foreground swatch to your choice of colour.
Lesson.

3/
Now, activate the Horizontal Type Tool -
Type Tool Lesson.

And apply the type of your choice.

Tip
Make a note of your colour’s HTML - this ensures that you fill the canvas with the exact colour, (later in this lesson).

4/
Now, activate the Add a Layer Style (f, fx) icon at the foot of the Layers palette.

Layers Explained Here!

And click Bevel and Emboss from the pop-up menu, and choose the following settings
Here.

5/
Activate the Add a Layer Style icon, and this time, choose Drop Shadow from the menu, these are my Drop Shadow settings
Here.

6/
From the top menu, choose Layer then choose New then choose Layer, then click OK. There is no need to name the layer, unless you wish to.

7/
From the
toolbar, activate the Paint Bucket Tool.

And ensuring the Foreground colour is exactly the same colour as the types - click to fill the new layer with your choice of solid colour.

8/
Then from the Layers palette, drag the type layer to above the (purple) fill layer.

9/
From the top menu, choose Filter then Sharpen then (again) Sharpen - this creates the glassy effect.

10/
I flattened my Layers, (Layers then Flatten Image) then placed a 10 pixels white border around my image - (Image then Canvas Size) - as explained in my lesson
Here. I also decorated my image with Custom Shapes.
