This lesson demonstrates how to create a multi coloured tartan background.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool. 
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.  1/ Open a New image, and ensure the Width and Height are equal.
2/ Then set the Foreground and Background swatches to your choice of colours.
3/ Activate the Gradient Tool and stretch a gradient line over your image, in the direction indicated by the arrow.

 4/ Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Wave. Set the following attributes, then click OK.
Note Wave settings are entirely dependant upon your image’s size, and the look you are seeking. It is therefore important to spend a little time experimenting with the Wave settings.
Working on a 400 x 400 pixels image, my settings produce the following effect.
5/ Now you have created your tartan effect, it is time to save it as a Pattern. Therefore, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. Enter a suitable name for your tartan pattern then click OK.
Your tartan pattern has been saved to Photoshop’s Patterns folder and can be utilised whenever you wish. Link Here to learn how to permanently save Patterns.
