This tutorial demonstrates how to create textures from scratch.
Undo Note
You can step backwards at any time by clicking the top menu’s Undo Tool.
Please Note: Elements 8’s Orange Horizontal Bar
The following Orange Horizontal Bar is exclusive to Photoshop Elements 8. Please link here to read my comprehensive Understand Elements 8, 9 and 10’s Workspace tutorial.

Open a New document and set the following attributes.
Tip
Centralise your photograph by snapping it to the top menu’s orange horizontal line.

Then press your Keyboard’s D Key to set the default Black and White colour swatches.

Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render then choose Clouds.

Again, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render, and this time, choose Difference Clouds.

Duplicate the Background Layer by dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon. Then left-click to remove the Top Layer’s Visibility Eye Icon to hide its Visibility. Then activate the Bottom Layer.

Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Stylise then choose Emboss. From the subsequent Emboss dialogue box, set the following attributes, then click OK.
Note
For personal results, experiment with the Emboss Filter.

Click back the Top Layer’s Visibility: - then change its Blending Mode from Normal to Overlay.
Tip
For personal results, experiment with different Blending Modes.

To add colour, press Ctrl then U. (Enhance, Adjust Colour, Adjust Hue/Saturation). From the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, mark the Colourise box, and play around with the Hue and Saturation sliders to produce a colour you like the look of, then click OK.

To save your background as a Pattern: from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. From the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a unique
name for your Pattern, then click OK.

To finish, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image.

Congratulations, your Texture is complete and ready to utilise.
Tip
Further lighten or darken your texture, with the Dodge and Burn Tools: additionally, experiment with different filters to personalise your texture.
Sharpening Tip
To create extra clarity, from the top menu, choose Enhance, then select a Sharpening Filter of your choice from the subsequent drop-down list.
