This lesson demonstrates how to create tubular type.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way. 1/ Open a New document and set the attributes of your choice. If you you are not printing your work, set the Resolution to 72 Pixel/Inch; if you are printing, set it to around 300. Extend the New document’s grey workspace by dragging out one of its corners.
2/ Now, set the Background colour swatch to your choice of colour. 3/ Then press Ctrl then tap your Backspace key. This fills the canvas with your choice of Background colour.
4/ From the toolbar, activate the Horizontal Type Mask Tool.
My tutorial Here demonstrates how to utilise the Type Tool. My tutorial Here demonstrates how to apply the Horizontal Type Mask Tool.
And set your choice of type attributes into its Options bar; then apply your type. Now, left-click, and drag the type to a central position.
Note A nice round font works well.
Then click the Commit any current edits tick.
Your type will now be surrounded by a selection marquee.
5/ Now, press Ctrl then J. This copies the area inside the selection marquee (the type) and pastes it as a new layer, in the Layers palette.
Note The selection marquee has been saved to an Alpha Channel, and is currently not visible - it is not necessary to retrieve it, on this occasion.
6/ Double-left-click Layer 2 (not over the name). This displays the Layer Style dialogue box. From its left-side menu, click Inner Shadow, and set the following attributes, (or experiment), then click OK.
Tip If you drag the Layer Style dialogue box to the right - or left, of your image, you will see how the settings effect your tubular type.
Changing just the Inner Shadow’s Contour to the following, creates a different effect.
Create unique effects by experimenting further with Layer Styles, perhaps applying a co-ordinating Stroke Style.
7/ When you are happy with your type, apply a Perspective Shadow/Reflection, as demonstrated in my tutorial Here.
8/ Then from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, and save your work.
