TV Lines Photoshop

 Create Scan Line Patterns
Suitale for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create and apply a TV (scan) line pattern. To work along you can download my Tynemouth image HereUnzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Note
You will only find scan lines on televisions with tubes; don’t try looking for them on LCD or Plasma (or newer) screens - there aren’t any.

Temporarily and Permanently Save Patterns to Photoshop’s Patterns folder

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open your photograph onto Photoshop’s workspace, minimise it for now.

2/
Now, open a New document, and set the following attributes.

3/
Zoom in, so you can see the document clearly - I zoomed in ten times.

4/
Then from the toolbar, activate the Pencil Tool.

And set the following attributes into its Options bar.

5/
Press your keyboard’s D key to set the default Black and White (Foreground and Background) colours.
6/
Then left-click to apply a single black pixel to the bottom of your transparent document - carefully positioning it, so it fills the space precisely.

7/
Now, from the Pencil’s Options bar, reduce the Opacity to 50%.

8/
Then apply a second (fainter) pixel, directly above the solid black pixel.

9/
Press your keyboard’s X key to swap the Foreground and Background colours, the Foreground colour will now be White.

white reverese pixles

10/
Then return the Opacity to 100%.

And apply a White pixel to the very top; leaving the pixel beneath it transparent. Your column will now resemble the following, and you are ready for the next step.

11/
It is time to create your pattern. Therefore, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. In the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a unique name into the Name box, then click OK.

Your pattern has been temporarily saved to your Patterns folder - to permanently save your pattern to Photoshop’s Presets folder, link
Here.

12/
To apply your newly created pattern, activate your photograph.

Then from the top menu, choose Layer then choose New Fill Layer then choose Pattern. In the subsequent New Layer dialogue box, accept the default settings, then click OK.

In the subsequent Pattern Fill dialogue, scroll to the bottom of your pattern thumbnails, and double-left-click to set your scan lines. Additionally, increase the Scale to 156%Note: The larger your image’s resolution, the higher the Scale needs to be. Additionally, for wider, or thinner scan lines - experiment with the Scale.

Click OK to apply your pattern.

13/
Now, working on the Pattern Fill 1 layer, change its Blending Mode from Normal to Overlay. And reduce the layer’s Opacity, if you feel it is necessary.

Congratulations, you have created and applied your scan lines pattern.

14/
From the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, then
save your work.
