This lesson demonstrates how to create a vortex (maelstrom), effect utilising Photoshop’s Wave and Polar Co-ordinates filters.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way. 1/ Open a New image, and ensure the Width and Height are equal.
2/ Now, set the Foreground and Background swatches to your choice of colours.
3/ Then activate the Gradient Tool and stretch a gradient line over your image.
Gradient Tool Lesson Here - Chapter 6.
4/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Wave and set the following attributes, then click OK.
5/ Then again from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Polar Co-ordinates. In the subsequent Polar Co-ordinates dialogue box, set the following attributes, then click OK.
6/ Now you have created your tunnel effect, it can be edited using Photoshop’s filters and commands. For example, harsh demarcation lines can be smoothed using the Blur Tool - and the outside (noncircular) area of the tunnel can be removed using the Elliptical Marquee Tool, or the Pen Tool. Experiment with different gradient colours; tweaking the Wave and Polar Co-ordinate settings to create unique results.
