This tutorial demonstrates how to create a water ripple using the ZigZag filter.
My lesson here demonstrates how to create metallic water from scratch.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Open a New document and set the following attributes - set a Resolution of 300 pixels/inch if you are printing your work.
2/ Set your Foreground and Background colours to the following.
Then from the toolbar, activate the Gradient Tool.
In the Gradient Options bar, double-click to set the following Foreground to Background gradient.

Then shift-drag to apply a gradient from the bottom of the canvas to the top.
3/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose ZigZag. In the subsequent ZigZag dialogue box, set the following attributes, or experiment - then click OK.
4/ Understanding Layers Duplicate your layer by dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon.
5/ Then press Ctrl then F. Pressing Ctrl and F applies the same ZigZag filter to your duplicated layer.
You have created your ripple effect; while the layers remain intact, experiment with different Blending Modes, to see how they effect the ripple.

6/ When you are happy with the result, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, then save your work.
