Woody Fibre

 Create Woody Fibrous Backgrounds
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create woody/fibrous backgrounds.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open a New document and set the dimensions of your choice - I chose the following settings.

If you are not printing your work, a Resolution of 92 Pixels/Inch will be fine.

2/
Set the Foreground and Background colours to Black and Brown, respectively.

The brown colour’s HTML is 7f4c1f
Change colour tutorial here - Chapter 4.

3/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render then choose Clouds.

Note
If you don’t like the random cloud effect - Step Backwards, and reapply the Clouds filter. Additionally, pressing X to swap the Foreground and Background colours may produce a result with more texture.

4/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render then choose Fibres. In the subsequent Fibres dialogue box, set the following attributes, or experiment, then click OK.

5/
Duplicate the Background layer by pressing Ctrl then J. And working on the duplicated layer, (Layer 1), change its Blend Mode from Normal to Screen. This lightens your fibrous effect. However, for personal results, experiment with different
Blend Modes.

6/
Press Ctrl then U. And in the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, play with the Hue and Saturation sliders to create a colour you like, then click OK. I chose the following settings to create a cherry wood tint.

7/
To finish, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Sharpen, and apply a Sharpen filter that suits your needs. My Sharpen Images lesson can be found
Here.

8/
When you are happy with your fibrous background, it is ready to incorporate into your artwork. To save it as a pattern - from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. In the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a suitable name, then click OK. Link
Here to learn how to permanently save your background as a Pattern.
